Description: This layer depicts the north pacific albacore tuna commercial fishing effort expressed as average number of vessel days fished per 20km block from 1995 to 2021. Data includes logbook data for all vessels that fished off the coast of Oregon.The Oregon commercial albacore tuna fishery targets albacore using hook-and line or troll gear. The fish start migrating into the waters off Oregon around the end of June, and are most commonly found in clear blue water (where the surface temp is 62 degrees or more). The best fishing is typically in July and August, but fish are still available through early October. The west coast fleet consists primarily of vessels ranging from 20-60 feet in length, with multiple permits to harvest crab, salmon, or groundfish at other times of the year. Most years, tuna fishers must travel 30 miles or more offshore to find albacore. The layer was developed using the kernel density function in ArcPro. Kernel density estimates were created using the point density spatial analyst tool. Commercial albacore logbook data were used to create points that met the following criteria:Points that intersected land were removedPoints that did not meet the rule of three unique vessels per 20km grid cell were removedThese filters removed 1% of the points for all yearscombined.These point locations were used as the population field with an output cell size of 20km and a search radius of 0.5 cells. Fishery logbook data are recorded on standardized data sheets by fishermen during their fishing operations. The logbooks are later turned over to SWFSC for data entry and processing. Logbook submission non-compliance, poor data quality, sub-entering protocols and filtering for confidentiality are contributing factors to this data set representing less than 100% of the landings made during each crab season. Description: This layer depicts total estimated recreational bottomfish angler-trips for the years 2015-2020 combined, based on data from the ODFW Ocean Recreational Boat Survey (ORBS). These estimates are for bottomfish trip-types only, and do not include estimates of angler-trips for other trip-types (e.g., salmon, halibut, tuna, or "combination" trips). Bottomfish trips typically target rockfish and lingcod, primarily over hard substrates. The ORBS interview records an angler's fishing locations as one of 48 "reef" locations along the Oregon coast, delineated to the north and south by lines of latitude, and either inside or outside of the 30-fathom line. The farthest west line in the map is the 100-fathom line, included for illustrative purposes but is not part of the defition of a "reef".1. ORBS interview data was used to generate where angler trips take place based on what “reef location” they were fishing in. 2. ORBS estimates were then used to expand the raw data above based on the boat counts and anglers per boat to best estimate the effort for that individual port.3. RecFIN estimates were then used to expand the estimates by ports into the minor ports that were not interviewed, or only interviewed seasonally4.
